The S13C can be used with one preheat (those lamps with an integral starter) twin-tube or quad compact fluorescent lamp in most downlight, wall sconce and recessed wall fixtures. (See Lamp Rating Chart.) It installs easily with a variety of fixture types; however, some fixtures may not accommodate emergency equipment, especially surface-mounted fixtures. In these situations, the S13C may be remote installed half the distance recommended by the AC ballast manufacturer, up to 50 feet. If used with an emergency-only fixture, no AC ballast is necessary.

OPERATION
When AC power fails, the emergency ballast automatically starts and operates a lamp at full power the first few seconds to eliminate the need for a ground plane, then reduces to a lower lumen output to conserve battery power. The lamp operates in the emergency mode for a minimum of 90 minutes. When AC power is restored, the emergency ballast automatically returns to the charging mode.

INSTALLATION
This equipment does not affect normal fixture operation and may be used with either a switched or unswitched fixture. If a switched fixture is used, an unswitched lead must be connected to the emergency ballast. Installation is not recommended where the ambient temperature may fall below 0°C for extended periods. It is also not suitable for installation in heated air outlet fixtures, and wet, damp, or hazardous location fixtures. For simple visual inspection of the charging indicator light and easy operational testing, the test/monitor plate can be installed near the fixture wall switch. The test monitor plate may also be installed in the ceiling near the fixture to ensure an unobtrusive installation. S13C has two wire harnesses with 2' of flexible conduit, one at each end of the ballast.

UL and CODE COMPLIANCE
This equipment has been tested and approved by Underwriters Laboratories in accordance with the standards set forth in UL924 - "Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment," and is UL LISTED for installation either inside or on top of the fixture. Emergency illumination exceeds the National Electrical Code (NEC), Life Safety Code (NFPA-LSC) and UL 90-minute requirements.

BATTERY
Heat is the primary cause of battery failure in emergency ballasts. A special high-temperature nickel cadmium battery is used which requires no maintenance and has a life expectancy of 7 to 10 years.

This equipment produces 200 - 625 lumens initial emergency illumination, depending on wattage of lamp used, for a minimum of 90 minutes.

SPECIFICATION
Emergency lighting shall be provided by using a twin-tube or quad compact fluorescent fixture equipped with a SIDE-LITE S13C emergency ballast. The S13C shall consist of a special high-temperature, maintenance-free nickel cadmium battery, charger and electronic circuitry enclosed in one compact 9 3/8" x 2 3/8" x 1 1/2" metal case with 2' lengths of flexible conduit on each end. A test/monitor plate with test switch and charging indicator light shall be provided to monitor the charger and battery. The emergency ballast shall be capable of operating one lamp in the emergency mode for a minimum of 90 minutes by operating the lamp at full power the first few seconds to eliminate the need for a ground plane, then reducing to a lower lumen output to conserve battery power. Initial emergency light output for twin-tube lamps shall be 625 lumens for a 13W lamp, 475 lumens for a 9W lamp, 300 lumens for a 7W lamp and 200 lumens for a 5W lamp, and for quad lamps output shall be 525 lumens for a 13W (GX23 base) lamp, and 475 lumens for a 10W lamp, and 425 lumens for a 9W lamp. The S13C shall have 3.5 Watts of input power, a 14.4 Watt-hour battery capacity and comply with the emergency standards set forth by the current NEC. The emergency ballast shall be UL LISTED for installation either inside or outside of the fixture, warranted for a full two years from date of purchase, and made in the U.S.A.

WARRANTY
Model S13C is warranted for two (2) full years from date of purchase. This warranty covers only properly installed SIDE-LITE emergency ballasts used under normal conditions. For the warranty period SIDE-LITE will, at its option, repair or replace without charge a defective emergency ballast, provided it is returned transportation prepaid, and our inspection determines it to be defective under terms of the warranty. Repair or replacement, as stated above, shall constitute the purchaser's exclusive warranty, which does not extend to transportation, installation, labor or any other charges; nor does it apply to any equipment of another manufacturer used in conjunction with the emergency ballast.
