The Side-Lite Relay Control Device (SBD20) works with a generator or central inverter system to provide emergency lighting on any fixture, including fluorescent, incandescent and HID, up to 20 amps regardless of switch position. One SBD20 is used per 20-amp load. More than one fixture may be serviced by a single SBD20 unit as long as the maximum lighting load does not exceed 20 amps and is controlled by one switching device (unless configured for 3- or 4-way operation). The device contains three form C contacts, which allow the user a variety of wiring options. The SBD20 can be used in the following ways: (1) transfer a lighting load from normal power to generator or central inverter system power when there is a loss of normal power; (2) bypass the fixture wall switch permitting the generator or central inverter system to activate designated switchable emergency fixtures, (3) bypass a dimming panel to allow lighting to energize at full brightness in emergency situations while preventing backfeed; and (4) bypass most dimming controls using an auxiliary relay contact. When normal power fails, the SBD20 immediately and automatically bypasses the local switching means, bringing on designated switchable emergency lighting fixtures. Routine maintenance is not required; however, all life safety unit equipment should be checked periodically to ensure it is properly functioning.

As with other Side-Lite equipment, the SBD20 does not affect normal fixture operation. The SBD20 comes fully assembled and ready to install. In addition to available wiring, the SBD20 requires an unswitched, direct connection to a normal power circuit. See diagram at right. The SBD20 has been approved by Underwriters Laboratories (UL 924) and is UL Listed for field installation.

The Side-Lite SBD20, used in conjunction with a generator or central inverter system, shall provide emergency lighting for lighting loads up to 20 amps. Should normal power fail, the SBD20 shall bypass the local switching means, thereby allowing designated switchable fixtures to provide emergency illumination regardless of fixture wall switch position (on/off). The SBD20 consists of relay switching circuitry, a test switch, a normal power indicator light and an emergency power indicator light enclosed in a 9" x 6" x 3.5" case. It shall be rated for 120 through 277 VAC, 50/60 Hz at up to 20 amps of lighting load and draw 45 mA and 4.0 Watts during normal sensing operation. It shall comply with the current NEC requirements, be UL Listed and be suitable for field installation in indoor or damp locations. The SBD20 shall be warranted for a full five years from date of purchase.

The SBD20 is warranted for five (5) full years from the date of purchase. The Side-Lite warranty covers only properly installed SBD20s used under normal conditions from the date of purchase. For the full warranty period, Side-Lite will, at its option, repair or replace without charge a defective unit, provided it is returned to the factory transportation prepaid and our inspection determines it to be defective under terms of the warranty. Repair or replacement, as stated above, shall constitute the purchaser’s exclusive warranty, which does not extend to transportation, installation, labor or any other charges; nor does it apply to any equipment of another manufacturer used in conjunction with the Side-Lite unit.
